Today, we join co-operatives around the globe in celebrating International Day of Co-operatives. This year’s United Nations theme — “Co-operatives Build a Better World” — captures what we already know to be true here in Alberta: co-ops don’t just imagine a better future — they’re building it.
From community-owned broadband and renewable energy to affordable housing and local grocery co-ops, Alberta’s co-operatives are creating real-world solutions rooted in shared ownership, sustainability, and long-term impact.
This year is also the International Year of Co-operatives, and ACCA — with support from our Legacy Builders, including Sustainer Members and champions helping to fuel Alberta’s co-operative future, along with funding from the Government of Alberta’s NRED program — is marking the moment with three bold initiatives that reflect the growing energy and innovation across our sector:
The Co-op Connection Tour
A nine-stop event series connecting local co-operatives, community leaders, and entrepreneurs across the province. These regional gatherings will spark conversations, build networks, and strengthen the ties that keep Alberta’s co-op economy thriving.
The Alberta Co-operative Conference
This year’s conference theme, 'Next is Now: Together, We Build,' sets the stage for two days of inspiration, strategy, and cooperative leadership. From grassroots changemakers to major sector players, we’re bringing Alberta’s co-op ecosystem together to share what’s working and where we go next. What’s Next Is Yours:
A Virtual Event Exploring Shared Ownership and Collective Power through the Co-operative Model. This national initiative is all about connecting a new generation of changemakers with the co-operative business model — and showing what’s possible when you lead with values instead of profit. Anchored by a digital campaign and a cross-campus virtual event during Co-op Week 2025, this initiative will showcase how co-ops offer tangible, practical alternatives for individuals eager to take the next step.
From social media storytelling to campus outreach, the campaign will spark conversations about ownership, leadership, and economic democracy, and invite students, creators, and community builders to see themselves reflected in the co-op model.
