Understanding Albertans’ Preferences for Community Renewable Energy Projects

Community renewable energy projects can be designed in many different ways. How decisions are made, how benefits are shared, and who has a voice all shape whether people choose to participate and invest.

The research team is inviting Albertans to take part in a short online survey (about 15–20 minutes) that explores these questions by comparing simple project options that vary in:

  • decision-making power

  • community benefit

  • investment structure

  • types of renewable energy used

By participating, you’re helping researchers better understand what supports strong, successful, community-led renewable energy projects.

Why This Matters

From our perspective, community renewable energy is about more than clean power. It’s also about ownership, local impact, and having a meaningful say in projects that affect our communities.

The insights from this research will help:

  • Guide governance decisions for co-operatives and community energy projects

  • Identify what motivates people to participate and invest

  • Support stronger, more resilient community-led initiatives

Ultimately leading to better project designs, greater participation, and stronger co-operatives and communities.

ACCA is reaching out to members of Alberta co-operatives in support of this University of Alberta research and encourages you to help support a student-led academic project by participating in the survey.
